As a child, Bill Viola almost drowned, and when he was almost dead, he felt a sense of being released and of freedom and warmth. Years later Viola's mother drowned.
Perhaps as a result of these experiences Viola uses water in many of his artworks, as a symbol of the portal between life and death.
